It’s Election Day! Now what do I do?

We want to celebrate first-time voters! Please tag us in your social media pics! @prepare2vote

Have some new voter jitters? Here’s how you can prepare.

First, check your voter registration online.

If you don’t see what you think you should, call your County Elections Office.

You do not typically need to show ID at the polls, but if you are at all concerned about making sure the poll workers let you in the voting booth, you can bring any of the following, just in case:

  • your sample ballot for scanning,

  • or a photo ID,

  • or a current document with your name and address.

And don't leave without voting. Posted at every polling location is the Voter Hotline. Call. There are attorneys and judges at the ready to help on election day.

"If you registered by mail and did not provide one of those numbers on the form, you will need to show an ID before voting. Acceptable IDs include a current and valid photo identification (e.g., New Jersey driver’s license, military or other government identification, student or job identification, store membership card, U.S. Passport), or any current document with your name and address on it (e.g., a bank statement, paycheck, rent receipt, sample ballot, utility bill, government check, car registration, non-photo driver’s license, or any other official document)...If your polling location is not open when you arrive, call our hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) or the Division of Elections at 1-877-NJ-VOTER (1-877-658-6837) to alert officials of the problem. Polls are open 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. If your right to vote is challenged by an official challenger, ask the poll worker for an affidavit, which you will sign to confirm your identity or address. The worker will allow you to vote either on the machine or by a provisional ballot." NJ ACLU

What if I am leaving for college or moving away?

New Jersey makes voting easy. You can vote by mail, or early in-person, if you won’t be home on Election Day.

To Vote by Mail - you can check the Vote by Mail box when you register to vote, or if you are already registered, print and complete a paper application (scroll down to find your county) to have your ballot mailed to you. We recommend you complete the process by Oct. 28, 2025 to send the application by mail, or by Nov. 3, 2025 to do it in person at the County Elections Office.

Ballots start landing in mailboxes about 3 weeks before the election, and continue right up until election day. Keep checking your mailbox, fill out your ballot, and mail it, drop it in a Drop Box in your County of residence, or deliver it to your Board of Elections Office.

You can also vote early at any polling location in the County where you live, including Saturday and Sunday, October 25 thru November 2.

Will I need ID to vote?

No. You do not need ID to vote unless you were not able to provide a valid Driver’s License number, a non-driver NJMVC issued ID, or your social security number when you registered to vote.
Hot Tip - bring your sample ballot to the polls. It can be scanned to prove everything polls workers need to know!
