P2V’s Official Vote by Mail Checklist
You don’t need a reason to vote by mail in New Jersey.
If you are going away to school, leaving for vacation, unable to get to the polls for any reason, voting by mail is a great option, and it’s easy!
Our suggested checklist -
Check your registration -
Make sure you are registered to vote, and that all of your information is correct. If the information you see is not what you expected, or not correct, call your County Board of Elections. They are happy to help!
Apply -
If you are registered to vote, download the paper form listed under your County (they are pre-addressed) fill it out and send it in by October 23rd. Or deliver it in person. If you are registering to vote for the first time, check the boxes on the application that are right for you. If you are experiencing homelessness, you can register using a P.O. box, the address to a local shelter, advocacy organization, outreach center, or the home of someone who will receive mail on your behalf.
HOT TIP - include your contact information, so if there are any issues with your ballot the Board of Elections can reach you to give you the opportunity to cure your ballot and have your vote counted. If you are not sure the Board of Elections has your contact information on a previous application, give them a call.
Check your mail -
Ballots start being mailed 45 days before the election and continue to be mailed until just before Election Day. If you applied to vote by mail and did not receive your ballot, call your County Board of Elections, or you can vote by provisional ballot at your polling place.
Vote by completing your ballot -
Inside the envelope there are 3 parts:
The ballot
An inner envelope with an attached “certificate.” (the certificate is the flap everyone keeps talking about. We know, it’s flimsy. Do not detach!)
A large mailing envelope addressed to your County.
How to complete your ballot:
Completely fill in the oval in black or blue ink next to each of your selections.
Place the ballot into the certificate envelope.
Complete and sign the certificate, (the flimsy flap) keeping it attached.
Place the ballot into the certificate envelope.
Then, place the certificate envelope into the mailing envelope.
Find your nearest Drop Box -
While you can absolutely mail your ballot, we like the Drop-Box option. It is secure and you never have to worry about delays. And you can use any Drop Box in your County.
You can also drop your ballot off at your County Board of Elections.
You cannot drop it off at your polling location. Poll Workers cannot accept Vote by Mail Ballots.
